This page is a little about the Jews who have contributed to the British Way of Life. Many were born elsewhere and either by choice or neccesity landed on British shores, Others like Jules Styne and Jerry Springer were born in Britain but made their name in the USA. And others like Felicity Kendal and Elisabeth Taylor converted to Judaism. Others had just one Jewish parent. This list includes England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales.  Prior to this list the only monuments to well known British Jews were the chairs in the now long-gone Isows Restaurant in Brewer Street, London. Each had a name on the chair.- Progress means the Internet can replace those chairs.  We have obviously missed out many more and we invite readers and/or the relations of our selections to assist us with pictures or information. Thank you- all correspondence  iClick here

watchdogTO ALL THOSE WHO USE THIS PAGE FOR RACIST MEANS

From The UK Informed Investor WATCHDOG Column

Henry Makow (born November 12, 1949) is a Swiss-born Canadian Jewish author and self-appointed conspiracy researcher. He is notably the inventor of the board game Scruples. Makow is known for his acrid criticism of homosexuality and feminism which he asserts to be ploys in the NWO scheme of destroying the fabric of society, i.e. inter-human relationships.  He has tried to use this page as an example of his lack of knowledge about British Jewry and British History, pointing people of similar ilk to a list of Jews who have contributed immensely to both British & World peace & advancement. In order to protect those people we withdrew this page and informed the author of his obvious errors. He withdrew the article, however some other websites have reproduced this erroneous page. We are able to monitor them and pass the information on to the appropriate authorities Those who are based in the UK are liable to be sued under the Prevention From Harassment Act 1997, which under s.2.2 may result in a criminal conviction and up to 6 months imprisonment and/or a class 5 fine.  Any further repeat by such people to do the same will only result in us publishing such behaviour and reporting them to the appropriate authorities. We apologise to our many readers (30 million in 2008 & 38 million so far in 2009), but we will not allow our pages to be used or referred to for such outrageous untrue propaganda. Now one of them has copied our page in contravention of the laws of copyright and we have instructed our lawyers to sue for damages.

As various groups of people, who for some reason fear the Jewish People are advertising this page as an example of something sinister- we are now adding what eminent non-Jews say about the Jewish People. On a recent programme on Christianity the BBC acknowledged that Christianity is indeed a sect of Judaism.

"Some people like the Jews, and some do not. But no thoughtful man can deny the fact that they are, beyond any question, the most formidable and the most remarkable race which has appeared in the world."

-- Winston Churchill
"The Jew is that sacred being who has brought down from heaven the everlasting fire, and has illumined with it the entire world. He is the religious source, spring, and fountain out of which all the rest of the peoples have drawn their beliefs and their religions."
-- Leo Tolstoy
"It was in vain that we locked them up for several hundred years behind the walls of the Ghetto. No sooner were their prison gates unbarred than they easily caught up with us, even on those paths which we opened  up without their aid."
-- A. A. Leroy Beaulieu, French publicist, 1842
"The Jew gave us the Outside and the Inside - our outlook and our inner life. We can hardly get up in the morning or cross the street without being Jewish. We dream Jewish dreams and hope Jewish hopes. Most of our best words, in fact - new, adventure, surprise, unique, individual, person, vocation, time, history, future, freedom, progress, spirit, faith, hope, justice - are the gifts of the Jews."

-- Thomas Cahill, Irish Author

"One of the gifts of the Jewish culture to Christianity is that it has taught Christians to think like Jews, and any modern man who has not learned to think as though he were a Jew can hardly be said to have learned to think at all."

-- William Rees-Mogg, former Editor-in-Chief for The Times of London and a member of the House of Lords

"It is certain that in certain parts of the world we can see a peculiar people, separated from the other peoples of the world and this is called the Jewish people....
This people is not only of remarkable antiquity but has also lasted for a singular long time... For whereas the people of Greece and Italy, of Sparta, Athens and Rome and others who came so much later have perished so long ago, these still exist, despite the efforts of so many powerful kings who have tried a hundred times to wipe them out, as their historians testify, and as can easily be judged by the natural order of things over such a long spell of years. They have always been preserved, however, and their preservation was foretold... My encounter with this people amazes me..."

-- Blaise Pascal, French Mathematician

"The Jewish vision became the prototype for many similar grand designs for humanity, both divine and man made The Jews,   herefore, stand at the center of the perennial attempt to give human life the dignity of a purpose."

--Paul Johnson, American Historian

"As long as the world lasts, all who want to make progress in righteousness will come to Israel for inspiration as to the people who
had the sense for righteousness most glowing and strongest."

--Matthew Arnold, British poet and critic
"If there is any honor in all the world that I should like, it would be to be an honorary Jewish citizen."

--A.L Rowse, authority on Shakespeare
"Indeed  it is difficult for all other nations of the world to live in the  presence of the Jews. It is irritating and most uncomfortable.  The Jews embarrass the world as they have done things which are  beyond the imaginable. They have become moral strangers since the  day their  forefather, Abraham, introduced the world to high ethical  standards and to the fear of Heaven. They brought the world the Ten  Commandments, which many nations prefer to defy. They violated the  rules of history by staying alive, totally at odds with common  sense and historical evidence. They outlived all their former  enemies, including vast empires such as the Romans and the Greeks.  They angered the world with their return to their homeland after  2000 years of exile and after the murder of six million of their  brothers and sisters.
They aggravated mankind by building, in the  wink of an eye, a democratic State which others were not able to  create in even hundreds of years. They built living monuments such  as the duty to be holy and the privilege to serve one's fellow  men.  They had their hands in every human progressive endeavor,  whether in science, medicine, psychology or any other discipline,  while totally
out of proportion to their actual numbers. They gave  the world the Bible and even their "savior."

Jews taught the  world not to accept the world as it is, but to transform it, yet  only a few nations wanted to listen. Moreover, the Jews introduced  the world to one God, yet only a minority wanted to draw the moral  consequences. So the nations of the world realize that they would  have been lost without the Jews.. And while their subconscious  trie s to remind them of how much of Western civilization is framed  in terms of concepts first articulated by the Jews, they  do anything to suppress it.

They deny that Jews remind them  of a higher purpose of life and the need to be honorable, and do  anything to escape its consequences. It is simply too much to  handle for them, too embarrassing to admit, and above all, too  difficult to live by.

So the nations of the world decided once again  to go out of 'their' way in order to find a stick to hit the Jews.  The goal: to prove that Jews are as immoral and guilty of massacre  and genocide as some of they themselves are.

All this in  order to hide and justify their own failure to even protest when  six million Jews were brought to the slaughterhouses of  Auschwitz and Dachau; so as to wipe out the moral conscience of  which the Jews remind them, and they found a stick.

Nothing  could be more gratifying for them than to find the Jews in  a struggle with another people (who are completely terrorized by  their own leaders) against whom the Jews, against their best  wishes, have to defend themselves in order to survive. With great  satisfaction, the world allows and initiates the rewriting of  history so as to fuel the rage of yet another people against the  Jews. This in spite of the fact that the nations understand very  well that peace between the parties could have come a long time  ago, if only the Jews would have had a fair chance. Instead, they  happily jumped on the wagon of hate so as to justify their jealousy  of the Jews and their incompetence to deal with their own moral  issues.

When Jews look at the bizarre play taking place in The Hague,  they can only smile as this artificial game once more proves how  the world paradoxically admits the Jews uniqueness. It is in their  need to undermine the Jews that they actually raise  them.

The study of history of Europe during the past centuries  teaches us one uniform lesson: That the nations which received and  in any way dealt fairly and mercifully with the Jew have prospered;  and that the nations that have tortured and oppressed them have  written out their own curse."

--Olive Schreiner, South African  novelist and social activist

Jews in The Second World War 1939 / 1945
Of the estimated Jewish population of 400,000 in the United Kingdom, something like 70,000 Jewish men and women served during World War ll in the British Armed Forces, of whom 14,000 were in the Royal Air Force, and 1,500 in the Royal Navy. The figures are those of men and women actually contacted by Jewish Chaplains or whose names have appeared in authentic and checked nominal rolls. They do not include Dominion personnel or the 30,000 men and women who voluntarily enlisted in the British Forces in Palestine.

British Jews bore their full share of the war in every quarter of the globe in the operations on Sea, on Land and in the Air, as indeed they continued to do in the Korean conflict, Malaya, Kenya, the Falklands and other theatres of war. About 10,000 Jewish refugees, who had sought refuge here from Hitlerism just before the war, enlisted in Alien Pioneer companies, and so proved their worth, trust and martial qualities that many were transferred to first class fighting battalions, some becoming Commandos, and paratroopers, and not a few being commissioned, and awarded decorations.

Palestine Jews served with the Royal Navy, Army and Royal Air Force. They were in France in 1940, in the campaigns in Greece and Crete, in the Western Desert, and again in Europe.
The Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, commanded by Brigadier E.F. Benjamin C.B.E., fought in Italy, and its members won 4 MCs, 7MMs, 2 OBEs, 4 MBEs, 2 American awards, and 72 Mentions in Dispatches. Polish Jews served with the Army and RAF. Many fought in the Battle of Britain and at Monte Cassino.

Two-Gun Cohen
By Marvin Tokayer

This is one of those “truth is stranger than fiction” stories. A ne’er-do-well son of impoverished Polish Jewish immigrants residing in England near the turn of the 20th century achieves success and prominence in a role no Jewish parent has ever envisioned for his offspring: A Jewish general in the Chinese army? A personal bodyguard to a prominent world leader? A street named Cohen Road in the fashionable French Concession district of Shanghai?

This tale has all the elements of an implausible Hollywood screenplay: high drama, brutal violence, heart-wrenching poignancy, political intrigue and a boy-makes-good triumph of the human spirit over all manner of adversity. But this is no Hollywood fantasy. This is the little-known – but absolutely true – account of Morris Cohen, a naturalized Canadian, frequently referred to in the press as the “uncrowned Jewish king of China,” who, in travelling the uncharted course that his life took, arguably changed the course of history.

Morris (Moishe) Abraham Cohen was born in 1887 into a large, Orthodox Jewish immigrant family who had settled in London’s East End. The crushing poverty his family endured was probably a factor in his becoming a tough street kid, earning his stripes as a petty thief and conman. Grossly overweight even at the age of eight, Moishe became known as Fat Moishe and often used his ample girth to his advantage in the boxing ring. But Fat Moishe never entered the ring on Friday night, as he was always present at the family’s Shabbat table.

Moishe’s exploits ultimately landed him in Hayes Industrial School, a juvenile reformatory, at the tender age of 13. Even there, as a repeat felon, runaway and truant, he was pegged a troublemaker. At one point, Moishe seemed to turn the corner under the mentorship of Israel Ellis, the school’s headmaster. Nonetheless, upon his release a few years later, Moishe, still an embarrassment to his family and the London Jewish community, was shipped overseas to Canada where a family friend was to take him under his wing and introduce him to the “gold-paved” streets of the New World. With five British pounds in his pocket, Moishe arrived in Canada. His father’s friend, who was penniless himself, immediately dispatched Moishe by train to Saskatchewan, which, at the turn of the century, was very much the Wild West.

Moishe found work on a farm near Wapella, Saskatchewan. In addition to the skills acquired as a farmhand, he also learned to shoot and play cards. After a short time, Moishe began wandering through the western provinces, earning money as a carnival barker, gambler and peddler of fake jewellery. He also acquired an interest in real estate, which proved to be quite lucrative in the developing western provinces.

Before long, Moishe – now known as Morris – succumbed to the world of gambling and womanizing. His old habits resurfaced as he elevated his proficiency at cheating into an art form. Cohen worked with loaded dice, marked cards and hidden mirrors, and lived by the motto “Do unto others, but do it first.” His lifestyle required that he be skilled with a gun, which he didn’t hesitate to use to protect his life and dignity.

In the early part of the 20th century, western Canada was home to a vulnerable, disenfranchised, discriminated-against minority, the immigrant Chinese, who had come to Canada to pan for gold in British Columbia and help build the Canadian Pacific Railway. Persecuted in many ways, they were often robbed and cheated, even by the authorities. But Morris Cohen had a soft spot in his heart for the local Chinese. As a Jew, he identified with their ancient culture, their exile and their proud ancestry, and sympathized with them as casualties of hatred and discrimination, foreigners who were relentlessly persecuted and misunderstood.

Morris Cohen formed a tight bond with his Chinese neighbours. They would often exchange stories and anecdotes – the Chinese relating the classic lessons and morals of Confucian ideology and Cohen responding with tales from his childhood home that embodied the guiding principles and essence of Jewish life.

Stirred by the similarity between the values and ethics of the two cultures, Cohen became an advocate and protector of the local Chinese population. Once, happening upon a robbery in a Chinese-owned establishment, Cohen impulsively delivered a blow that knocked the thief unconscious. A radical act, given the rampant racism that existed at that time and place, Cohen thus earned a reputation as a hero and protector of the Chinese and their rights.

At that time, a revolution was brewing on the other side of the world as Dr. Sun Yat-sen was beginning his odyssey towards attaining independence for China and restoring the country to its ancient glory. His mission was to eradicate the corrupt imperial system and institute a democratic and progressive new China. The charismatic leader had clandestinely come to Canada – with a million-dollar price on his head – to enlist the support of the Canadian Chinese community. Covert meetings were arranged, and Morris Cohen, intrigued by the volatile world of Chinese politics, was invited to attend. The Chinese found in Cohen, with his intense convictions, charming personality and keen intelligence, a useful ally. At that very meeting, Cohen – a foreigner to the Chinese and child of shtetl immigrant Jewish parents – was unanimously voted into the Chinese secret society mandated to liberate China.

Distrustful of any outsiders, Dr. Sun was persuaded that Morris Cohen was indeed an ally, and a private meeting was arranged. The two men connected immediately, seeing eye to eye on numerous relevant issues. The meeting went so well that Sun Yat-sen invited Morris Cohen to join Tongmenghui, his anti-Manchu organization and return with him to China. Though Cohen felt that the time was not right for such a move, he did agree to act as Dr. Sun’s personal bodyguard in Canada. And as the two men grew better acquainted, their friendship blossomed.

Cohen found many ways to demonstrate his loyalty to the Chinese cause. Given funds to purchase arms, he managed to smuggle 200,000 rifles, revolvers and other armaments into China, hidden in boxes labeled “Singer Sewing Machines.” (To this day, light machine guns in China are still known as “Singers.”)

By this time, Morris Cohen had become a successful real estate speculator in western Canada and was making a fortune. With each lucrative deal, he donated a portion of his profit to Dr. Sun’s progressive movement.

With the outbreak of World War I in 1914, the 27-year-old Cohen volunteered to train 750 Chinese soldiers for the Canadian army and lead them in battle, but the military refused his offer. Cohen instead enlisted and was sent to France where he fought with the Canadian Railway Troops and, ironically, was asked to command a regiment of a Chinese labour brigade.

After the war, Cohen finally accepted Dr. Sun’s persistent petitions to join him in China. He had internalized the leader’s dream of a great, free and democratic China, which had finally begun to materialize with the toppling of the Imperial government in 1912. In China, Cohen became Dr. Sun’s aide-de-camp, serving as his personal bodyguard, advisor, arms purchaser and friend. He was promoted to the rank of colonel, and, on no less than two occasions, rescued Dr. Sun from assassination attempts.

After a battle in which Cohen was grazed by a bullet in his right arm, he recognized the importance of being adept at shooting with both hands. Indeed, he always carried an automatic in his shoulder holster and a Smith & Wesson on his hip. To westerners, Cohen would forever be known as Two-Gun Cohen, but to the Chinese, he was reverently referred to as Mah Kun, or General Mah. This designation was not only an “orientalization” of the Jewish name, Morris, but also a sign of the deep respect and affection that the Chinese felt towards him.

In addition to his role as Sun Yat-sen’s protector and confidante, Morris Cohen was instrumental in achieving many important goals for China. He helped close a deal in 1922 with Canadian companies Great Northern Construction Company Ltd. and J.W. Stewart Ltd. to build and extend 1500 miles of railway across China’s vast land mass. He was a pioneer in establishing the Chinese secret service, a necessary adjunct for the fledgling administration. He became an avid fundraiser for the young government, garnering support and cooperation of overseas Chinese in Hong Kong, Canada, the United States and Singapore. And he also held a vital post with the Central Bank of China, in charge of the security of the bullion vaults and empowered to issue new currency. Cohen inspired enough confidence in the economy to prevent a collapse of the national bank, greatly enhancing his reputation for financial acuity.

Morris Cohen became an indispensable asset to Sun Yat-sen. As an intelligence officer, Cohen was responsible for Hong Kong and monitored foreign powers in China. It was his job to procure all types of guns, ammunition, tanks and even airplanes for the government and he had his hand in almost every aspect of its operation. In fact, the Manchester Guardian, a staid and respected British publication, labeled Cohen the “diplomatic and financial force behind modern China.”

All this was only a preamble to what, for the Jewish nation, was undoubtedly the most fascinating aspect of the Two-Gun Cohen saga. Very few are aware of the vital role Cohen played in fostering Chinese support for the Zionist movement and for the creation of the State of Israel. In 1920, Dr. Sun penned the following statement: “I express my sympathy to the movement which is one of the greatest movements . . . All lovers of democracy cannot help but support the movement to restore your wonderful and historical nation which has contributed so much to the civilization of the world and which rightly deserves an honourable place in the family of nations.” This, likely due in part to Cohen’s influence, was one of the earliest letters of support for the formation of the Jewish state.

Two-Gun Cohen cried only twice in his life: when his father died and when he learned of the untimely demise of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, whom he regarded as his hero. At the private funeral of the first president of China, Two-Gun Cohen was the only foreigner present, for he was considered family. Dressed in top hat and tails, Cohen led the procession that paid tribute to the father of modern China.

Dr. Sun’s successor, Chiang Kai-shek, held the loyal and trusted servant of China’s first president in the highest regard, and appointed Cohen a general in the Chinese army, making him not only the first Jew, but the first person of European descent to hold such a post in the Chinese military. Cohen continued to prove his worth to the new administration as well. He was among the first to recognize the danger posed by Japan, a small country with a large population that had its sights firmly fixed on expansion, and warned China to consider Japan its primary enemy.

Cohen also alerted Chiang Kai-shek to the internal threat presented by a large group of Soviet agents within government ranks, the members of which were subsequently purged. As a precaution, Cohen helped train Chinese civilians and farmers to defend their country in the event of a foreign invasion. To rouse them, he provided evidence of Japanese genocidal ambitions: a gas cylinder used during the Sino-Japanese war.

When China was invaded by Japan in 1937, Cohen supplied weapons to the Chinese and provided intelligence for the British. On December 7, 1941, the day of the infamous Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Cohen inauspiciously found himself in Japanese-occupied Hong Kong. Incarcerated in the notorious Stanley Prison, Cohen was beaten and tortured by his Japanese oppressors but refused to divulge any information. He was finally released as part of an unusual prisoner exchange in 1942 and repatriated to Canada, where he was greeted by both welcoming admirers and quizzical immigration officers who had never before heard of a Canadian general in the Chinese army.

The end of the world war was also the beginning of the civil war between hostile factions in China, ultimately dividing the country into two warring states. Under Communist rule, mainland China was led by Mao Zedong and became known as the People’s Republic of China. Chiang Kai-shek headed the Republic of China, which established itself in Taiwan. Both leaders detested each other, but were deferential towards Two-Gun Cohen, the only person allowed to fly directly from Taipei (Taiwan’s capital) to Beijing, as both Chinas trusted him. In fact, both states utilized Cohen’s services to convey top-secret messages and extend peace feelers between themselves.

Despite all these accomplishments, Two-Gun Cohen likely achieved his greatest triumph after he had retired and was living quietly in Montreal.

The United Nations, the organization born of the Second World War with a mandate to ensuring lasting world peace, had its origins in San Francisco. One of the most important issues on the agenda soon after its formation was the question of whether the partition of Palestine into two states – one Jewish and one Arab – should be a matter placed before the General Assembly. A veto by any member nation would scuttle the debate and thwart any plans for a future Jewish state.

The Americans favoured the partition proposal on ideological grounds; the French planned to vote for it to assuage their guilt for their mistreatment of the Jews during the Holocaust; and the Soviets supported it as a ploy to push the British out of the Middle East. Opposed to the plan, of course, were the entire Arab orbit and any country they could entice to their side, including China, which accepted their “Asia for the Asians” propaganda strategy.

The outcome was by no means certain; many fence-sitting nations were subject to intense, last-minute lobbying from both sides. Zionist leaders in San Francisco were desperate to meet with the Chinese delegates to present their position, but were refused an audience. Rabbi Israel Goldstein, an astute member of the Zionist group, made a quick phone call to Montreal, bringing Cohen to San Francisco for an emergency meeting. When informed that a diplomat by the name of General Wu was leading the Chinese delegation to the UN, Cohen smiled knowingly and announced that it was he who had appointed Wu a general. Cohen met with Wu the following morning and the rest is history. China did not vote against the partition, but instead abstained, contributing to the passage of the motion. After 2000 years of exile, the State of Israel would now become a reality.

Two-Gun Cohen died in September, 1970, at the age of 83, after returning to his family in England. His funeral was attended by representatives of both Chinas – who were still at war with each other – demonstrating their deep respect for the loyal friend of China. His tombstone was etched with traditional Kohanic and English inscriptions, memorializing the British Jew. But what sets this headstone apart from all the others in the austere Manchester cemetery is an inscription in Chinese characters that a grateful Mme. Sun Yat-sen, the Vice Chairman of the People’s Republic of China, penned, acknowledging Mah Kun as a hero of China. It is a tribute to the man who was, if not by birth, then certainly at heart, a true brother to the Chinese people.

Nick and Gavin Scott climb Kilimanjaro in memory of mum
From The Jewish Chronicle ,Candice KriegerDecember 30, 2008

Property brothers Nick and Gavin Scott have taken on their most meaningful project yet — with not a building lease or investment yield in sight. The duo have climbed Kilimanjaro, raising more than £8,000 for cancer research in memory of their mother, Sandra, who died from the disease 12 years ago.

Thirty-three-year-old Nick (pictured, left), of commercial agency Ian Scott International, says the climb is something he has wanted to do for many years.
He tells People: “With our mum dying from cancer and so many other people we know affected by it, cancer research is always a good cause. You need that inspiration. “It was pretty tough — the hardest thing I’ve ever done. It’s like an optical illusion. The mountain is nothing like it looks in the pictures.”The climb took them seven days. Gavin, 30, who lives in Costa Rica, adds: “Doing it with my brother and for such a good cause meant that there was nothing ever in our sight other than the top of the mountain. The reason we were doing it really lifted our spirits when the were down.”

For Nick, training included climbing the Atlas Mountains in Morocco, Snowdon in the UK and Ben Nevis in Scotland, whereas Gavin says he spent time trekking through the Central American rainforests.
